Very interesting story.
Roman water supply system comes to mind. Romans assumed that water has to flow all the way downhill. Due to their limited understanding of siphons, they erected huge structures for their water supply. Well it gave world some great architectural marvels, it was unnecessary.
My take on the story is that if your basic assumption is wrong, whatever you do on that basis will be wrong. And the trouble is that you won’t know that. You would try to fit every observation on that wrong assumption and will ignore the truth even when truth is looking at you.
Thanks for your comment 🙂
I appreciate your perception. This is definitely an interpretation.
This story reminds me of the trap set by our assumptions in which we are bound to live forever if we do not validate our assumptions. But as rightly pointed out in the first comment that its difficult to know about our wrong assumptions. So we will keep on fitting every observation on those wrong assumptions and will never come to know the truth. I see only one way to come out of such traps which is time to time we should stop doing the things the way we do and try to see and analyse what happens and also keep ourselves open to listening, learning and trying other’s point of views whom we trust as learned persons. In other words always keep ourselves open to learn and don’t hide ouselves in boundaries of notions created by us.
Thanks. It is a good comment 🙂
I read in one story on panchtantra, that if you do something with good heart with good intentions, doesn’t matter how wrong your assumption is, things will automatically be corrected.
And i think it is true
coz when we start doing anything by good intentions, we start moving on the path of truth, and path of truth no matter were it was started irt will lead to enlightenment.
As per this story, people assumed that darkness flown in through sky, and when they have too much of it, they call it night. But what was their intention : to get rid of it, they through it out, but they didn’t care what will happen afterthat. So they have an incomplete understanding and their intentions may go wrong.
had they tried to get rid of darkness by removing it or killing it, they must have come to know the truth.
Thanks Aman. It is also a good interpretation 🙂
